Breathe well, Live well!
Long time before the creation of the vinyasa system, which is the movement of the body with the breathing, through different shapes, postures, known also as asanas, YOGA was simply the art of simply breathing!
And it is interesting to see how back then, the breathing process was used as a medicine. Science was not yet so advanced. There was less knowledge about what today is called modern medicine.
Yet, people managed to treat themselves and keep them healthy through a constant, correct practice of breathing.
Humanity kept on breathing, ever since. However, today, more than ever, we are dealing with a lot of illnesses. And while of course, breathing might not be the only important aspect when talking about bringing one’s body back into full balance and health, the way we breathe can make a huge difference.
I remember one of my students asking me a year ago, which way is better to breathe:
through the mouth or through the nostrils?
I smiled, and I told him just exactly what my teacher told me long time ago
“if legs were made for walking, for running,
If eyes were made for seeing,
If ears were made for listening,
If the mind was made for thinking,
Then the nose was made for breathing!
Keep using every part part of your body for what was made for!”
In the process of breathing, few aspects are crucial:
Posture – the spine must be erect. The body must be alert, yet relaxed.
Breathe only through the nostrils.
Slow down, as many times as you remember to during your day
The key in breathing, like in any other process or practice, is simply this: keep it simple!
But keep it going!
Day, after day, after day!
And remember, “Things don’t have to be complicated in order to be effective!”
